Doctor of TESOL James Aaron Parmelee is a highly experienced educator in the field of teaching English as a foreign language who owns and operates his own language academy in Bangkok, Thailand, with academy branches also located in Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen.
A native of Missouri, USA, James attended the University of Missouri in Columbia before serving four years with the U.S. Army, including a year in Vietnam.
After then completing his education and honing his teaching skills with a certificate in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), James has spent most of the past forty years teaching and employing teachers in Thailand. He loves Thailand as his second home, and has conducted his own learner customized TEFL course for the past fourteen years.
James and his Thai wife, Sureeporn, have two children: Jeynah, an honors graduate in Interior Design from MSU in Springfield, Missouri, and Benjamin, a graduate of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Both children have successfully completed our TEFL Course and are now trained and professional EFL/ESL teachers, as well as instrumental in the administration of our Bangkok Academy.
How James Founded TEXT-AND-TALK
The Thailand national institute, TEXT-AND-TALK Academy, is the author and owner of the TEFL for Target Learner Groups TEFL Courses Training Program, written, prepared and copyrighted through the Library of Congress by Director James Parmelee, who founded our Academy in 1990. By that time, James had taught English to the Thai people himself over a period of 23 years.
Being a school owner was a bit different, however, from teaching, as it soon became apparent that when trained English native-speaking teachers were required, few were available. James and our Academy thus coped, as well as possible, with intelligent, well-educated Westerners, who had some experience at one level or another, or who could be quickly trained in grammar and in how to teach from an assigned textbook. It certainly was not the ideal way to conduct language training, but it was the best that could be done at the time.
Reasons for local foreigners not receiving teacher training were several, but mainly centered around the facts that only the Cambridge CELTA teacher training course was available, and the tuition fees were higher than most foreigners living in the Thai economy could afford at that time. It also was quite ‘exclusive’ in its approach to potential trainees, often demonstrating non-responsiveness to enquiries, while administering grammar tests, exams and required ‘projects’ to ‘weed out’ persons who were not (from our point of view, at least), minimally half-trained as teachers already.
James knew, however, that persons excluded from that course would stay in Thailand and ‘teach’ anyway, in most cases; and fully realizing the great potential of most of these persons, he longed for a chance to train them by ourselves in a course that was ‘inclusive’: meaning that we would happily take in talented persons and train them in any areas of deficiency they might have as part of the course itself.
James thus worked very hard and long at developing the course materials, ending with about eight times as much material for the course as is given by any other provider.
Among these many materials (six course modules plus a complete self-contained TEYL (Teaching English to Young Learners) Course, a professionally recorded pronunciation tape and a carrying bag for all of these), was a book to help Thais and other English students learn about conversational grammar quickly, easily and efficiently through their teacher's course-learned expertise, and a book to enable a course teacher to walk into any classroom on earth knowing through the principles of language comparison and contrast what problems with English the students were having, as well as the origin of the problems and all of the essential means for solving these.
(Naturally, the first emphasis was on teaching effectively to our own Thai students, the latter, by the way, being very pleased with our trained teachers as a result and reluctant to let them slip away!)
The next step, of course, was to acquire accreditation for our course, initially through the Thai Ministry of Education. This was hard, as the MOE had always assumed that courses of this type must be administered by universities only (the exact opposite, of course, of what was actually needed in the real world of EFL teaching).
Anyway, to make a long story shorter, after about a year and a-half our course was finally certified, and universities and other levels of academia the world over began to appreciate the value of our training. In fact, our certificate is now prized by schools, academies and universities all over the world, including the British Council. Teachers also learn more practical knowledge as a result of all these materials and the smooth way in which the training is conducted than they would from any other course, bar none.

By now, our Academy has grown into an institute unique for its quality of instruction and academic care, and which has always been on the cutting edge of language service delivered with both professional authority and a loving and caring heart for the Thai people and their learning needs.
And this is a bit of history about how TEXT-AND-TALK Academy has grown and developed over the years...

James and his family are very proud that our trained teacher graduates are fully equipped and skilled in teaching English to Thai and other Asian students especially, but also to company staff with business English requirements, and students of all levels and objectives, including children in private and government schools, bilingual schools, international schools and universities.
The more than 3,000 professional teachers we have produced so far, and who are now teaching throughout Thailand and in over 30 other countries bear witness (along with their happy employing schools!) of the success of our endeavors to private the best teachers possible for students in Thailand and across the world.
In summary, to date TEXT-AND-TALK Academy has not only trained trained more than 3,000 professional EFL/ESL teachers who now work through Thailand and all across the world, our academy has also trained classes of Thai students whose number now has reached ever 1,000,000! Likewise, we have successfully conducted workshops, seminars and summer camps for more than 7,000 companies, plus numerous government departments, agencies and ministries, and even the Ministry of Education itself!
In summary, we are very proud of the contributions that TEXT-AND-TALK Academy, under the administration of James Parmelee and his family have been able to make toward presenting the gift of English to the lovely Thai people, as well as other students all around the world!
In short, if you need training, please do not settle for less than the best!
